During the airborne Operation Tomahawk, Major Banerjee parachuted down with the surgical team of 60 Indian Field Ambulance behind the opposing force and for five days and nights continuously, with tireless energy, organised the medical care and surgical treatment of the seriously wounded. During- this period, he was several times under hostile mortar fire. But with utter disregard for personal safety, and with amazing power of endurance, he carried on rendering medical aid to casualties and saved many lives.

His personal courage, his determination, and his selfless devotion to duty were sources of inspiration to the rest oft he surgical team.
