On 29 June 1948, at Machhoi, Naik Chet Singh was in command of a section picquet. Under the cover of darkness the enemy had brought two MMGs and an attacking force to within 800 yards of the picquet. At 0600 hours under heavy concentration of 2 inch mortar and MMG cross fire, the enemy managed to reach within 150 yards of the picquet. Three men out of his section had been seriously wounded including LMG No. 1. He himself manned the LMG and became a vulnerable target for enemy MMGs. His wireless set got blown away, the only link he had with the company. The enemy made hourly fanatical charges only to be hurled back by accurate LMG and rifle grenade fire.

The enemy called out many times to the picquet to surrender in view of heavy odds against them and there being no hope of reinforcements coming, he confidently shouted back challenging the enemy to come forward and test his strength. Under his fearless leadership the men reacted magnificently and stood firm as rocks, each one pledging to die or destroy the enemy. Displaying continuous courage and skill at arms, he forced the enemy to withdraw after seven hours of the most bloody and uncertain battle.

Throughout the seven-hour uneven and terrific battle, he proved himself a valiant leader of outstanding tenacity and cool courage.
