Second Lieutenant Joginder Singh Jaswal was commander of a screen position of his battalion in the Western Sector. The position was subjected to heavy and accurate shelling and attacked by the enemy during the night of 3 December 1971. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he moved from one post to another to inspire his men. He brought heavy volume of fire on the enemy and repulsed the attack. The enemy again attacked the position twice and on both occasions the attacks were repulsed due to the leadership and courage displayed by him. On 5 December, he led a patrol to silence an enemy medium machine gun. In the process, he was hit by a medium machine gun burst in the neck. In spite of the wound, he brought back a wounded Naik who was with him. Throughout, Second Lieutenant Jaswal displayed gallantry, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order.
