Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 11 Jun 1948
Gazette Notification: 2 Pres 50, 26-1-50
Citation:
On 11 June 1948, "A" Company picquet of 1 Madras, deployed on the Ring Contour in J & K, was attached by the enemy some 300 strong and consisting of both the Pakistani troops and raiders. The attack which started at 0545 hrs was preceded by heavy mortar barrage. The enemy fired more than 70 bombs in about 90 minutes. The enemy, under cover of this barrage as well as of the heavy mist, had advanced to as close as 30 yards of the picquet. Another group of the enemy had taken positions in a nullah close to the picquet and kept giving war cries like "Allah Ho Akbar" and "Pakistan Zindabad".
Havildar T.K. Gopala Kurup was the Platoon Havildar in the "A" Company In the first attack, his section commander Naik Raju was hit and wounded. In spite of heavy firing, he personally evacuated Naik Raju to a safe place and took charge of his LMG. He foiled every attack of the enemy with this light machine gun. Eventually the bunker fell on him but he managed to make a slit through which he continued firing at the enemy. He then left the bunker and started throwing hand grenades at the enemy, which was advancing on the position with fixed bayonets. When he expended all the grenades, he came back and started firing again with his LMG. The enemy which had suffered heavy casualties was forced to withdraw and Havildar Gopala Kurup was able to save his position. Havildar Gopala Kurup showed great courage and devotion to duty. Though his life was in grave danger during the attack, he repulsed the attack with great determination and coolness of mind.
