Awardee: Brig Arvind Nilkanth Jatar, MVC (retd)

Gazette Notification: 2 Pres 50, 26.1.50
Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 08 Apr 1948

On 8 April 1948,4 Dogra supported by Central India Horse less two squadrons attacked Barawali in J&K. Captain Jatar went with the leading company in the attack. When the company was held up by heavy enemy medium machine gun fire, he moved across the bullet and mortar-swept area and stood up in full view of the enemy and indicated targets to his tanks.  Again on 10April 1948, Captain Jatar walked across the riverbed of Tawi to save the tanks from getting bogged in the river. Again on 12 April during the advance to Rajauri this officer crossed and recrossed the Tawi 11 times, all the time ahead of the tanks. It was mainly due to this officer's dauntless determined efforts that all the tanks reached the objective. The Special Situation Report of HQ J&K Force dated 15April1948, appreciating the work of captain Jatar, says: "I consider advance was only made possible by excellent navigation by the leading tank". Throughout the battle, Captain Jatar conducted himself with superb courage and with no regard for his personal safety.
