Awardee: Col Kishan Singh Rathore, MVC (retd)

Gazette Notification: 6 Pres/50,26.6.50
Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 06 Feb 1948

On 6 February 1948, at Tain Dhar near Naushera, Lieutenant K.S. Rathore was commanding a picquet with 70 men when a 1500-strong enemy force attacked. He kept going from post to post with complete disregard for his safety, and inspired his men to fight to the last. When there was hardly anyone left to replenish ammunition, he himself carried it forward under very heavy enemy fire. On 5 March, at Kaman Gosha Dhar, during the withdrawal, not caring for his personal safety, he brought back the body of a comrade lying in open ground swept by heavy enemy fire. In another action on 9April near Jhangar, when he came under heavy enemy fire, he made a determined bayonet charge forcing the enemy to retire.

Throughout the operations, this young officer proved himself a fearless and gallant leader.
