Awardee: Hony Capt Bas Deo, VrC

Gazette Notification: 2 Pres 50, 26-1-50
Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 06 Feb 1948

At a picquet, on 6 February 1948, Jemadar Bas Deo was in command of a forward post with strength of 12. The enemy used about 400 men to attack his post alone and attacked in five waves. The attack was beaten back with heavy loss of lives to the enemy. Throughout this action, Jemadar Bas Deo kept his presence of mind and by his able leadership inspired his men to fight on in spite of heavy odds. At one time, two enemy soldiers managed to reach one of his trenches, behind which they took shelter and began throwing hand grenades on the post.

Seeing this, Jemadar Bas Deo, completely disregarding his personal safety, came out of his bunker and killed both the enemy soldiers by throwing a hand grenade on them and bayoneting them. His men were greatly inspired by his courage, leadership and act of gallantry, and although much reduced in strength went on fighting until the last enemy soldier was killed or driven away. During this action, Jemadar Bas Deo showed qualities of leadership, determination, courage and devotion to duty of the highest order, which was an example to all ranks of his post.
