Awardee: Hav Bhag Singh, VrC

Gazette Notification: 17 Pres 64, 26-1-64
Operation: 1962 Leg Horn
Date of Award: 19 Nov 1962

On 19 November 1962, a battalion of Dogra Regiment was ordered to lay anti-personnel mines in front of its defensive position in J&K in view of an imminent Chinese attack. The mines had been airdropped and were known to have become unduly sensitive. Despite the risk, Havildar Bhag Singh volunteered for this task and in sub-zero temperature, while a snow storm was ringing, took out a party and started laying the mines, himself undertaking the most difficult and dangerous task of arming the mines. He had armed about 200 mines when one exploded, blowing off his feet, hands and nose and blinding him in one eye. Havildar Bhag Singh survived till the following day and even while lying grievously wounded his only concern was the completion of his duty and the well-being of the younger men of his platoon.

In this action, Havildar Bhag Singh displayed exemplary courage and devotion to duty of the highest order.
