Naik Ankush Mahadev Chawan was in command of the left forward section of his company during its attack on an enemy position in the Eastern Sector. During the assault both his light machine gun numbers were seriously wounded but Naik Ankush Chawan picked up the automatic himself and continued to fire from the hip till the objective was captured. During the next day, he inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.

During these actions, Naik Ankush Chawan displayed gallantry, determination arid devotion to duty of a high order.
