Vir Chakra (VrC)
Awardee: L/Hav Dan Bahadur Singh, VrC

Gazette Notification: 2 Pres 50, 26-1-50
Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 28 Jan 1948

A fighting patrol of one platoon of 4 Rajput was sent on 28 January 1948 to Nawan Hamirpur and the Sidhar area to capture and destroy raiders coming across Pakistan border. Sepoy Dan Bahadur Singh was in the leading section as Bren No. 1. When he saw ten raiders crossing the Chenab in a boat, he rushed to the river bank and opened upon the enemy. No raider could escape. The boat overturned. Sepoy Dan Bahadur Singh jumped into the river to recover arms or dead body. The current was, however, too strong and carried away the enemy dead and the boat.

Meanwhile a platoon of raiders opened up and tried to encircle the patrol. The platoon commander to avoid encirclement rushed and pulled the other two sections back. Sepoy D.B. Singh meanwhile scrambled out of the river and with No. 2 of the Bren rushed to a position from where he opened up on the enemy. This stopped the enemy advance.

Having kept his head cool at a very critical moment, coupled with prompt action and initiative, he inflicted casualties on the enemy and saved his platoon from encirclement. This act of bravery and devotion to duty regardless of personal safety was a fine example to his comrades.
