Ganga Ram was leading section of a company on an enemy position at Radio Katanga in Congo on 13 September 1961. The assault came under heavy enemy fire. Undaunted, Naik Ganga Pam charged the enemy position and with complete disregard for his personal safety rushed at one of the light machine guns. In the subsequent hand-to-hand fighting he killed the crew of the light machine gun and was himself severely wounded.

Naik Ganga Ram displayed courage, determination and leadership of a high order.
