Awardee: L/Hav Gian Chand, VrC

Gazette Notification: 77 Pres/72,17-6-72
Operation: 1971 Cactus Lily
Date of Award: 15 Dec 1971

Lance Havildar Gian Chand was a platoon commander in a battalion of Rajput Regiment, which had put up a roadblock in an area in the Eastern Sector. The enemy made repeated attempts to dislodge our troops from the roadblock by bringing down accurate artillery, mortar and automatic fire. Lance Havildar Gian Chand spotted an enemy bunker from where heavy machine gun fire was inflicting casualties on the troops. With complete disregard for his safety, he took a light machine gun and started crawling towards the enemy bunker. In the process, he was seriously wounded but he carried on unmindful of his injuries. When he was within a few yards of the bunker, he sprayed it with his light machine gun and lulled all the five occupants. He foiled all attempts by the enemy to regain control of the bunker. Before medical help could reach the bunker, Lance Havildar Gian Chand succumbed to his injuries.

In this action, Lance Havildar Gian Chand displayed gallantry and determination of a high order.
