Citation:

On 14 November, 1962, 2nd Lieutenant Vinod Kumar Goswamy was detailed to observe the Chinese on the north side of river Towang Chu in NEFA, and if possible, to capture a Chinese prisoner. After dark, 2nd Lieutenant Goswamy crossed the river with seven men. He soon discovered a Chinese sentry. Proceeding quietly towards him along with a rifleman he punched upon the sentry and, snatching his rifle, muffled him with a towel. The scuffle, however, brought another Chinese soldier to the scene and 2nd Lieutenant Goswami bayoneted him.

2nd Lieutenant Goswamy, realising that it would not be possible to drag the sentry away, hit him on the head with the butt of the captured rifle and started dragging him to his base. He was not seen thereafter. In this action, 2nd Lieutenant Goswamy displayed exemplary courage, initiative and leadership in the best traditions of the Indian Army
