Citation:

During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Commander Rajinder Singh Grewal was the commander in charge of all flying operations from INS Vikrant. The wind off Bangladesh during these operations was such that it made the taking off of aircraft from the Vikrant very difficult. Commander Grewal, however, continued to fly fighter-bombers and anti-submarine aircraft from this ship regularly. It was largely due to him that the two aircraft shot down by the enemy were recovered despite the fact that the wind conditions for recovery were extremely hazardous. Throughout, Commander Grewal displayed gallantry, leadership and professional skill of a high order.
