Citation:

On the night of 13 December 1971, Captain Hamir Singh was commanding a company of Grenadiers during the successful attack of Daruchhian in the Western Sector. He moved forward with his company to exploit his success, but soon came under heavy automatic fire from enemy bunkers and pillboxes. Undeterred, he pressed on and captured some more positions and prepared for the inevitable counter-attack. The enemy reacted faster than expected and launched a series of counter-attacks, but he successfully repulsed each. Despite severe bullet injuries in his arm and chest, he remained calm under heavy automatic and artillery fire. When the strength of his company was diminishing rapidly, an air strike was arranged to silence the most dangerously sited pillbox. As soon as the air strike was made he charged the enemy bunker with his company personnel and artillery observation officer's party. By his personal courage and tenacity he infused in his men the determination to hold on to the objective in spite of depleted strength and under heavy enemy fire.

In this action, Captain Hamir Singh displayed gallantry and determination of a high order.
