In the Zojila-Dras operation on 15 November 1948, a company of 4 Rajput was ordered to capture a feature east of Pindras. On the morning of 16 November under covering fire of supporting arms, the flanking platoons had reached within 40-50 yards of enemy positions when the enemy opened up. The advance of the left flank platoon was held up. Before the platoon commander could decide on his plan to capture the objective, Lance Naik Hanuman Ram, the forward-most section commander, on his own initiative ordered the section to keep the enemy engaged. He himself crawled up to a place from where the enemy automatic was about 10 yards, took out two hand grenades and threw them at the enemy positions.
As the grenades exploded, Lance Naik. Hanuman Ram shouted "Charge". The enemy got perplexed and started running away. Lance Naik. Hanuman Ram alone charged. On seeing him coming towards him the enemy left the LMG and ran away
By his undaunted courage and self-sacrifice, Lance Naik Hanuman Ram made the enemy abandon his position, captured the LMG and wounded the running enemy. His actions set an excellent example to his comrades.
