Awardee: Col Anil Kaul, VrC

Gazette Notification: 35 Pres/88, 22-1-88
Operation: 1987 Pawan Sri Lanka
Date of Award: 12 Oct 1987

Major Anil Kaul was part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka, and landed at Palali on 12 October 1987 at 1230 hours with two tanks to support two companies of an infantry battalion inducted into Jaffna town to establish link-up with Para Commandos at Kondavil and extricate them.

His force met with anti-tank fire and electronically-triggered improvised explosives. Undeterred, he led the advance, blasted the militants' strong points and succeeded in establishing contact with one tank, already inducted with the infantry battalion. Though seriously wounded, he continued to stay with the Commandos till the task was completed at grave risk to his life.

Major Anil Kaul displayed conspicuous courage and valiant leadership in the face of the militants.
