Awardee: Col Anantanarayanan Krishanaswamy, VrC

Gazette Notification: 73 Pres72, 17-6-72
Operation: 1971 Cactus Lily
Date of Award: 17 Dec 1971

Major Anantanarayanan Krishanaswamy was commanding a company of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles which had been ordered to establish a roadblock in the Eastern Sector. After the roadblock had been established on 16 December 1971, an enemy column of about 500 men, supported by tanks, was seen approaching the battalion position. The enemy engaged our forward companies one of which was commanded by Major Krishanaswamy. He moved from trench to trench and encouraged his men to hold on to the position. In the meantime, the enemy was seen forming up for an attack. Major Krishanaswamy got hold of two abandoned ammunition vehicles lying on the roadside and set them on fire. He also improvised a megaphone and asked the enemy to surrender. Owing to his persuasion and threats of retaliation, the enemy started giving themselves up in batches till they all surrendered.

In this action, Major Krishanaswamy displayed gallantry and leadership of a high order.
