Citation:

On 18 May 1948 two companies of 3 Royal Garhwal Rifles were ordered to attack and capture the Trahgam Ridge in J&K. During the attack, a Bren gunner in Rifleman Bhupal Singh's section was killed. Realising the danger to his platoon, he crawled forward and took over the Bren and kept on firing till the task was completed.

On 17 June, 3 Royal Garhwal Rifles was ordered to carry out a reconnaissance in force on Musargutte Ridge. Rifleman Bhupal Singh was with the leading company when the enemy counter-attacked in large number. Rifleman Bhupal Singh, on his own initiative, took up position with another rifleman on the right flank, from which side the enemy was approaching his position. He killed four enemy and thus checked the threat to his platoon.

When another flank was threatened, he volunteered to wait up for the enemy. During the withdrawal he carried all alone a badly wounded rifleman for about three miles under heavy enemy fire.

The courage, devotion to duty and comradeship displayed by this young rifleman were of an outstanding order.
