Citation:

On 28 October 2000 at 0630 hours, Major Amitabh Roy planned and executed a daring special mission close to the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir. Leading the special mission by personal example, he fearlessly charged the enemy, killed three and injured three of their soldiers and recovered one heavy machine gun. His audacious charge at the enemy created panic. His courageous and aggressive fighting spirit motivated the entire mission team to ruthlessly demolish the enemy's will to fight. Despite severe injuries due to enemy grenades and mortar fire he refused to be evacuated.

Major Amitabh Roy displayed conspicuous bravery, unparalleled courage, outstanding leadership and audacious fighting spirit at grave risk to his life in the face of the enemy.
