Citation:

During the attack on Rajouri on 14 April 1948, Havildar Baliram Vithal Salvi was in charge of a medium machine gun detachment supporting 1 Kumaon. The attacking troops were held up by intense fire from the enemy on the objective. Havildar Salvi pushed up a big stone at a suitable place and setting his gun behind it produced effective fire, which helped the attackers to capture the objective. The next day the position came under increased fire. Havildar Salvi was shot in the head but held on. He refused to be evacuated until his task was achieved.

In this action, Havildar Salvi displayed remarkable skill at arms and total disregard for his own safety.
