Captain Chander Ballabh Sharma, was the Second-in-Command of Alfa Company 13 Sikh Light Infantry deployed at Kadaiparichchan. On 13 September 1989, at about 1000 hours, a message was received from Subedar Teja Singh that his platoon had encountered militants in the Southern part of Kadaiparichchan. Captain Sharma was ordered by his Company Commander to rush with a section quick-reaction team and advance on to the militants from the east. Captain Sharma immediately rushed out and advanced towards the place of encounter. As he neared the enemy they drew a heavy volume of fire at him. But this gallant officer kept advancing till he could see the militants. He spotted a militant who later turned out to be the militant leader, trying to approach an IPKF injured soldier with the aim of snatching away his weapon. Captain Sharma shifted to a totally open flank from where only he could engage the militant.
With complete disregard to his personal safety, he moved like a flash and shot the militant trying to approach the injured soldier. He then engaged the other militants bringing heavy pressure on them from the eastern direction. Thereafter he deployed four other ranks under Havildar Sewa Singh to cover his move and himself moved quickly with three other ranks in an attempt to get behind the house occupied by the militants. Once again with complete disregard to his personal safety, Captain Sharma kept moving behind the enemy and engaged the militants who were now firing desperately to evacuate their dead and wounded. In this action, seven militants were killed and more than six injured.
Captain Chander Ballabh Sharma displayed conspicuous act of gallantry and astute leadership under adverse circumstances.
