Citation:

Major Vijay Kumar Vaid, who was commanding a company of Grenadiers in the Shakargarh Sector, was assigned the task of capturing an enemy position. This was a strongly fortified position held in strength and supported by twelve Browning machine guns. Despite heavy artillery and automatic fire by the enemy, Major Vaid led the assault and captured the objective after fierce fighting.

In this action, Major Vaid displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
