At Naushera in J & K during the attack on the Barwali ridge on 8 April 1948, Jemadar Bachittar Singh of Dogra Regiment was commanding the forward company. The company had hardly started the attack when the enemy started mortaring the area. As Jemadar Bachittar Singh took his platoon to cross a nullah, the enemy opened up with all his automatics. In spite of all that he took his platoon forward and occupied the other bank of the nullah.
The approach towards the objective was very difficult and one had to grab thorny bushes to climb up. Jemadar Bachittar Singh crawled forward to recce the route. After his recce as he was telling his sections to advance from the re-entrant, he was hit by three bullets, two of which were in the neck.
In spite of his serious injuries he completed his orders for the advance and when his men ran to evacuate him, he told them boldly:
"Do not worry about me, I am not going to die; you go and capture the objective.”
The exemplary courage ofJemadar Bachittar Singh was in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
