Citation:

Shri Joginder Singh, Deputy Commandant, was in charge of a post of the Border Security Force in the Rajasthan Sector. On 17 December 1971, he was assigned the task of organising fire support for the units taking up defensive positions west of wirawah. After reconnaissance, as his party was returning to Virawah, the enemy opened up from close range with heavy machine gun and mortar fire. He immediately jumped out of his vehicle and marshalling his small party, assaulted the enemy.

Though hit by a machine gun burst, he led the troops, fighting hand-to-hand till he succumbed to his injuries. In this action, Shri Joginder Singh displayed commendable courage, determination and leadership.
