Havildar Hari Das Nag was a platoon havildar in a battalion of Brigade of Guards assigned the task of capturing a feature in the Kargil Sector. He volunteered to destroy an enemy machine gun position which was holding the company's attack. He approached the enemy bunker, lobbed a grenade into it and charged fearlessly, killing the machine gun crew single-handed. He then stood up, signalling to his company that the machine gun bunker had been destroyed. In the process an enemy grenade burst near him as a result of which he died.

In this action, Havildar Hari Das Nag displayed gallantry and determination of a high order.
