Lance Dafadar Waryam Singh was on the strength of the Central India Horse which on 8th April 1948 was in action opposite Banvali Ridge in support of 4 Dogra. The enemy had pinned down the attacking company of 4 Dogra with medium machinegun cross firing. It had become essential to bring forward some tanks along the road in order to silence the enemy and allow Dogras to advance. But the road had not been cleared of the mines and was also well covered by direct MMG enemy fire. The Commanding Officers tank being nearest to the road took over the task.

Lance Dafadar Waryam Singh voluntarily dismounted from the tank and walked ahead of the commanding officers tank. He cleared the way by personally lifting three MKV mines under intense enemy firing and in the face of certain death. His undaunted courage not only saved the tank but also enabled it to engage the enemy on the right ridge and silence their guns. This was also the turning point in the battle for Banvali Ridge, which was eventually captured by the Dogras. Again from 9th to 12th April, Lance Dafadar Waryam Singh walked ahead of his commanding officer's tank through the Tawi River and enabled his commanding officer to control the battle which ultimately resulted in the capture of Rajauri on the evening of the 12thApril.

Lance Dafadar Waryam Singh displayed cool courage and devotion to duty of the highest order. Individual acts of bravery have been performed in battles but Lance Dafadar Waryam Singh's feat is the one and only one in the history of any tank battle.
