On 18 June 1948 at Zojila Pass in J & K, Sepoy Amar Singh was LMG No. 1 in a listening post. At 0610 hrs the enemy opened intense fire with all his weapons on the picquet position followed by an advance. A third of the picquet was destroyed and Amar Singh, wounded severely in the head, lay semi-conscious while his No. 2 had his arms shattered. The enemy made fanatical but abortive attempts to rush the picquet. But Amar Singh kept on tiring signal shots and occasional short bursts accurately, thus holding the enemy at bay single-handed. Throughout the day, enemy guns did not stop for a moment and some 200 enemy kept shouting and yelling at him. Rut this young soldier kept his head, firing eleven magazines out of the sixteen he had during the course of over 5 hrs and still keeping reserve the five magazines for last hand-to-hand fight.
The picquet was reinforced in the afternoon. Though he was profusely bleeding and feeling faint from the skull injury, he held on completely defying the heavy odds against him and utterly disregarding sure annihilation. He was carried inside at 2200 hrs still full of fight and determination to beat back the enemy. Throughout the sixteen hours of battle, this sepoy displayed extreme coolness of mind, skill in use of weapons and courage.
