Citation:

Major A.S. Bal was commanding a squadron of 17 Horse during the battle of the Basantar River in the Shakargarh Sector of the Western Front. On 15 and 16 December 1971, the enemy launched a number of armoured counter-attacks against the Jarpal position though heavily out numbered, Major Bal displayed exemplary courage, determination and aggressive spirit and by his personal example motivated his troops to remain steadfast and resolute, thus repulsing all enemy attacks with heavy casualties to the enemy.

Throughout this action, Major A.S. Bal displayed conspicuous gallantry, outstanding leadership and exceptional devotion to duty in keeping with the best traditions of the Army.
