Citation:
On 6 February 1948, Lance Havildar Daya Ram was commanding a forward section of his platoon at Tain Dhar, which was subjected to heavy enemy fire and attacks. His section post was attacked 5 times by the enemy. Most of his men including himself were wounded but he kept on throwing hand grenades and encouraging his men to fight on. When No. 1 of his Bren gun was killed, this NCO, though bleeding profusely, took the gun himself and fired with such good effect that heavy losses were inflicted on the enemy. In the enemy's final charge three enemy managed to come within 10 yards of his post, two of whom he killed with the Bren gun but the one came on and after wounding him for the second time with his sword caught the barrel of the Bren gun. Although badly wounded, Lance Havildar Daya Ram held onto the Bren gun, and with his left hand took out a hand grenade and after removing its pin with his teeth threw it at the enemy, who was blow into bits.
By this great act of bravery the NCO not only saved the Bren gun from falling into enemy's hands but also the lives of other four wounded men lying in his post.
