Operation: 1971 Cactus Lily
Date of Award: 1972

A battalion of the Grenadiers was given the task of capturing a heavily defended enemy position at Chakra on the Western Front. During the attack, the enemy brought down intense artillery and small arms fire, inflicting heavy casualties on our troops. Major D. V Singh, commanding the left forward company, undaunted by enemy fire and his depleted strength, led his company through a minefield and by personal example and exemplary courage inspired his men to rush the objective and capture it after a fierce hand-to-hand fight. The enemy subjected this position to heavy artillery bombardment and launched a counter-attack in strength on 11 December. Major D. V. Singh, with utter disregard for his personal safety, moved from trench to trench encouraging his men and motivating them to stand fast and repulsed the attack inflicting heavy casualties.

Throughout, Major D.V Singh displayed exemplary courage, leadership and devotion to duty in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army.
