Awardee: Sep Hari Singh, MVC (retd)

Gazette Notification: 2Pres/50, 26-1-50
Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 17 Mar 1948

During the advance on Jhangar (Jammu & Kashmir State) in an attack on Pir Thil Nakka on 17 March 1948, Sepoy Hari Singh was a rifleman in the leading company. During the assault his section came under heavy fire and was pinned to the ground. He spotted an enemy bunker and after throwing a grenade rushed at it, firing his sten gun killing both the defenders. Another enemy bunker opened accurate fire on him. He was not deterred. Though wounded in the knee, he threw a second grenade at the nearest enemy, killing one while the other fled. When the rest of his company came up, one enemy section led by an officer slipped away from a hidden post across his front. Sepoy Hari Singh was at least 20 yards ahead of his section and was responsible for killing the enemy officer.

By his individual actions, Sepoy Hari Singh was responsible for killing four enemy soldiers including an officer and breaking two enemy resistance points. In all these short but fierce actions where he could have lost his life any moment, he showed utter disrespect for intense and accurate enemy fire.
