Awardee: Col Gurbans Singh Sangha, MVC (retd)

Gazette Notification: 124 Pres/65,10-9-65
Operation: 1965 May - Ablaze
Date of Award: 15 Aug 1965

15 August 1965, in the area of Dewa Camp in Jammu & Kashmir, an infantry brigade suddenly came under heavy and concentrated Palustani artillery fire. Lieutenant Colonel Gurbans Singh Sangha, who was commanding a Mahar Battalion, extricated his battalion and continued to maintain his front intact throughout the day in spite of heavy enemy shelling. By holding the Mandiala crossing, he stabilized the situation. Subsequently, he directed his battalion with courage and confidence and recaptured three forward posts in the face of stubborn enemy resistance.

Again on 1 September 1965, when his battalion was cut off from the brigade by the enemy's heavy armour thrust, he presented strong resistance and foiled all attempts of the enemy to encircle and destroy his force. Throughout this operation which lasted about three weeks, Lieutenant Colonel Gurbans Sangha displayed commendable courage and leadership in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
