Citation:

Major Amrik Singh was commanding a company in a battalion of Sikh Regiment in the Rajasthan Sector. After attacking and capturing an enemy screen position on the night of 10 December 1971, he volunteered to lead the assault on another position. The objective was held by a company of Pakistani regulars, well fortified and protected by a minefield 600 metres deep. Major Amrik Singh led the assault and under his inspiring leadership his company charged through the minefield and captured the objective after fierce hand-to-hand fighting. During the assault, Major Amrik Singh was seriously wounded but continued to direct his men and repulsed the enemy's counter-attack.

In this action, Major Amrik Singh displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
