During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Sub-Lieutenant Ashok Kumar was with an Indian naval unit of the Eastern Fleet. On 10 December during the attack by Indian naval ships on the port of Khulna, Sub-Lieutenant Ashok Kumar came under heavy gun fire from enemy shore batteries. Though he was injured in the action and surrounded by the enemy, he led his men into battle and, in complete disregard of his personal safety, overpowered an enemy unit.
In the hand-to-hand fighting that resulted in the fall of Khulna, despite his injuries he led his men into a very successful attack. In this action, Sub-Lieutenant Ashok Kumar displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
