Citation:

Sepoy Banwari Lal was serving with a company of a battalion of Punjab Regiment which was assigned the task of capturing an enemy held area in the Eastern Sector. As the company was forming up, intense and accurate enemy artillery fire was brought down on it. With great presence of mind, Sepoy Banwari Lal directed his light machine gun fire on a large tree where an enemy observation post officer was hiding and killed him. Although he was seriously wounded in the fighting, he continued to support the company assault by covering the flank of the assault by his light machine gun fire till he succumbed to his injuries. In this action, Sepoy Banwari Lal displayed gallantry, determination and devotion to duty of a high order.
