Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 11 Feb 1948

Citation:
On 11 February 1948, Naik Birbal Ram was section commander when at 1530 hrs he was ordered to reoccupy a feature. His No 1 Bren gunner, Lance Naik Ladhu Ram, was wounded and fell down. The enemy was rushing forward and seeing the position, Naik Birbal Ram went forward where Lance Naik Ladhu Ram was lying and while trying to reach him was wounded. He cautiously applied the first field dressing, crawled forward and started firing with the Bren gun of Lance Naik Ladhu Ram.

When the ammunition was finished he brought the gun back and in the attempt to get more ammunition was wounded again and remained there ready to fight with his bayonet, till evacuated.

In this action, Naik Birbal Ram showed great bravery. Despite being wounded, he went forward to carry out his duty with utter disregard for heavy enemy fire and personal safety. This brave act was in the best traditions of the Army.
