Awardee: Hav Bisheshwar Singh, VrC

Gazette Notification: 94 Pres/72,19-8-72
Operation: 1971 Cactus Lily
Date of Award: 13 Dec 1971

On December 1971, a battalion of Rajput Regiment was ordered to capture an enemy position in the Eastern Sector. The attack of one of the companies was held up due to heavy and accurate fire from an enemy machine gun bunker located on a flank. Lance Naik Bisheshwar Singh, one of the section commanders of the company, who was given the task of neutralising the enemy machine gun, crawled up to one of the bunkers despite heavy enemy fire and lobbed a grenade in the bunker and silenced the gun. He then went towards the second bunker but in the process was seriously 'wounded in the thigh by a burst from a machine gun. Undeterred, he moved forward and succeeded in neutralising the second bunker also.

While returning to his company, he saw one of his men lying wounded in the minefield. With complete disregard for his safety, he entered the minefield and picked up his comrade. While returning with the casualty, he stepped on a mine and one of his legs was blown off

In this action, Lance Naik Bisheshwar Singh displayed gallantry, determination and devotion to duty of a high order.
