Citation:

On 21 September 1965, Lieutenant Mahijit Singh Buttar was commanding a company on the lchhogil Canal Bank. He exposed himself to enemy small arms, mortar and artillery fire in order to retain observation over the enemy on the far bank and to direct fire on the enemy. 

His efficient and gallant performance resulted in the destruction of an enemy tank and in raising the morale of his company. Lieutenant Buttar displayed courage and determination of a high order.
