Citation:

Sepoy Dharajit Singh Chahar of 4 Jat was a member of a party which laid an ambush against the militants at the road crossing on Vavuniya-Mannar Road in Sri Lanka on 13 January, 1989. At about 0850 hours, he spotted a group of militants approaching from an unexpected direction through this thick jungle. He alerted the ambush group and opened fire on the militants when they were at a distance of 10 metres. 

During the exchange of fire, Sepoy Sree Chand of his group was wounded. One of the militants, after throwing his own weapon towards his, unarmed comrade, rushed forward to snatch away the rifle from Sepoy Sree Chand. Sepoy Dharajit Singh Chahar, in total disregard for his personal safety, charged the militant, fired in his stomach, engaged him in hand-to-hand close combat and killed him. Another militant sensing danger from Sepoy Chahar's dare devil act, fired a fatal burst which killed him. 

Sepoy Dharajit Singh Chahar displayed conspicuous courage and valour in action against the militants.
