Awardee: Brig Bhupal Singh Chand, VrC

Gazette Notification: 2 Pres 50, 26-1-50
Operation: Op Savage (Sikkim)
Date of Award: 1950

Citation:
On 9 April 1948, Major Bhupal Singh Chand was in command of a company which was ordered to capture a dominating feature near village Chakli in J&K. When his company was just 200 yards short of the objective, the enemy opened up with all kinds of weapons and pinned the company down. Making a quick appreciation of the situation, he decided to attack the enemy from the right flank with a platoon. As his flanking platoon advanced, he put in a fake attack from the front thus drawing the enemy's entire firepower on himself With utter disregard to his own safety, he remained in the forefront of his company personally directing the fire. When some men of his forward platoon fell wounded, he himself recovered the casualties one-by one. He displayed great initiative, leadership and personal guts and was able to capture the objective much to the relief of the entire brigade. Earlier on the night of 24 February 1948, he gallantly extricated a company of his battalion which had been surrounded by the enemy at village Chinkheka. With remarkable haste, he arrived at the objective and personally directing the battle dealt the enemy a severe blow. He worked tirelessly to recover the casualties from the fire-swept area.

Throughout the operation, Major Bhupal Singh Chand displayed exemplary sense of duty, great qualities of leadership and gallantry of the highest order.
