Citation:

On 23 August 1988, an unconventional method of nabbing the militants in Sri Lanka in civil clothes and civil van was adopted. On the Vavuniya-Mannar Road in Sri Lanka, Havildar Prem Kumar Chauhan fired at the armed militants from the moving civil van, injuring one of them. Jumping off the moving van, he gave chase to the other militants. In a face-to-face encounter with a militant, armed with AK-47 rifle, when his own weapon got jammed, he lunged at the militant and disarmed him after a scuffle. After dispossessing the militant of his rifle, he fired from the snatched AK 47 rifle and injured him. One AK-47 rifle and a lot of ammunition were recovered in this encounter.

Havildar Prem Kumar Chauhan displayed conspicuous courage and valour in action against the militants.
