Citation:

A battalion of Madras Regiment was ordered to clear an enemy locality in the Eastern Sector. When the assaulting troops were forming up for the attack, the enemy brought down accurate and effective medium machine gun fire. Naib Subedar P.O. Cherian was assigned the task of silencing the machine gun. He and six other ranks crept towards the machine gun post. 

When the party was within 50 yards of the position, the enemy directed machine gun fire at them, injuring Naib Subedar Cherian in the arm and the chest. Undeterred, he continued to advance and direct the operation. Although he was again hit by a bullet, he continued to lead the party which succeeded in silencing the gun. Naib Subedar Cherian, however, succumbed to his wounds.

In this action, Naib Subedar Cherian displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
