Citation:

On 22 January 2000, Major Gopal Singh Chundawat was tasked to lead a raid on an enemy post in Pallanwala Sector in Jammu & Kashmir. As commander of the task force, he planned, prepared and rehearsed the mission diligently In an unorthodox move, he tackled the enemy post from the front and completely surprised the enemy. Coordinating the entire operation amidst heavy enemy fire, he identified key enemy bunkers and directed his groups to attack them. He personally assaulted the well entrenched underground living bunker of the enemy from where it was causing casualities to own troops. Unmindful of his personal safety, Major Chundawat, single handedly silenced them and then crawled inside the narrow entrance to pull out the enemy dead bodies and recovered military documents of immense value. Till the final demolition of the enemy post by explosives, he provided security to the demolition party and ensured that the entire task force including own casualties was safely back in own territory. Major Gopal Singh Chundawat displayed rare bravery, true grit, unique leadership and dogged determination while leading the task force in the face of the enemy.
