Citation:

Amlan Pratap Datta was commanding a company of 9th Gorkha Rifles which launched an attack in an area in the Eastern Sector. During the advance to the start line, two of his platoons were channelised to the right flank due to heavy enemy fire and radio contact was lost. He, however, moved forward with his company headquarters and the third platoon. When the advance of the company was losing its momentum due to enemy small arms fire, Major Datta charged the enemy position. This encouraged the men under his command and they charged with renewed vigour. This action forced the enemy to run away from the objective.
