Operation: Op Savage (Sikkim)
Date of Award: 26 Jan 1988
Citation:
On 16 October 1987, the 16th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was assigned the task of advance through the LTTE-infested area, to linkup at Jaffna fort. The "B" Company was leading the advance from Uduvil to Jaffna. This involved cross country movement in unfamiliar country full of jungles and LTTE threat. The "B" Company having cleared the area for 3 kms came across an open patch. The LTTE had organised strong well-concealed defences on high ground, covered with trees. The enemy that had his defence in horse-shoe fashion, trapped the company in this horse-shoe. Taken by surprise the company had no choice, but to dash for cover and position. "B" Company got pinned down due to accurate fire by the enemy from all sides.
In this shower of bullets, the company would have been butchered, but for the dare devil Sepoy Dayal Singh, who, on spotting enemy HMG on the left flank, undauntedly rushed through the bullets in a zigzag manner to site his LMG effectively He was picked up by the enemy and heavily fired upon. Risking his life, alone he sited his LMG and took on the HMG. With effective fire, he neutralised the enemy's most effective HMG, by killing two of the crew members. The third was injured, but managed to escape. This gave the Company some respite. On completion of his task Sepoy Dayal Singh re-joined his section.
Sepoy Dayal Singh has showed extraordinary courage in the face of effective fire, without bothering about his personal safety, and has thus saved the Company by effectively destroying enemy HMG.
