Captain Devinder Singh who was commanding a company of Rajput Regiment, was assigned the task of raiding enemy machine gun positions in the Eastern Sector. As the leading platoon reached the forward bunkers, the enemy brought down a heavy volume of small arms fire. With complete disregard for his safety, Captain Devinder Singh himself led this platoon in a charge and engaged the enemy in a hand-to-hand fight. Inspired by his example, the platoon succeeded in clearing the machine gun nests.

Though wounded in his right thigh, he continued to direct the operation till the mission was completed. In this action, Captain Devinder Singh displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
