Operation: 1947 Indo Pak Kashmir War

Citation:

A Patrol consisting of one company of Kumaon Regiment was detailed to clear raiders from a ridge in the area of Uri on 11 December 1947. Jemadar Dhan Singh’s platoon was leading. The patrol reached up to about 400 yards from the top of the ridge when the leading section observed an enemy post immediately in front of them and some movement on their right flank. Jemadar Dhan Singh signaled the patrol to take up an all-round defensive position and himself went up to the forward section to carry out a recce. Having spotted the enemy positions, he ordered his platoon to advance. As soon as the platoon advanced the enemy opened heavy fire but he ordered the platoon to charge with fixed bayonets and disregarding his personal safety he himself led it in the front. The attack was successful and the enemy was routed from the position, having suffered heavy casualties.
