Citation:

At Machhoi in J & K on 23 May 1948, during an attack on a feature, Lance Naik Dhani Ram was in command of the right forward section of the right leading platoon. It was caught in enemy automatic crossfire. He lost two men and his section was  definitely pinned down to the ground. This NCO would not take defeat and went from man to man encouraging them to push on. Under his own rifle grenade fire he drove forward vigorously with himself in the front. Two-inch mortars and grenades, were now bursting in the middle of his section causing one more casualty and his section was forced to go to ground. He alone crawled forward to within about 30 yards of the enemy and threw accurately two hand grenades, killing three of them. Then he signalled his section to come up, assaulted the enemy position with himself leading and reached his objective. Throughout this action, this NCO showed outstanding leadership, unfailing courage and a grit of high mettle.
