Paratrooper Diwan Singh was LMG No. 1 of the leading Section of the 12 Platoon of D Company of 5 Para tasked to capture the South Eastern portion of the Road-Rail crossing on 2 November 1987. He was given the responsibility to provide covering and innovative firing, in support of his section, engaged in a battle of built-up area. As soon as the Section cleared three houses, it came under effective intense fire from four to five General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG) of the enemy, and the Section was absolutely pinned down. Paratrooper Diwan Singh located a particular GPMG sited across the Rail Line in a well-concealed bunker. 

He moved from house to house and crawled up to 50 metres of the enemy GPMG bunker. He opened aimed intense fire on the enemy and silenced the enemy GPMG. Later, on clearing the bunker two dead bodies of the enemy were recovered, and his section moved up to secure the objective.

Meanwhile, another enemy GPMG sited on rooftop located Paratrooper Diwan Singh's concealed position, and fired a long burst aiming at his head. The burst of GPMG ripped apart the solid helmet ABT and a splinter entered the paratrooper's neck. Though bleeding profusely this paratrooper continued to engage the enemy till he was evacuated.

Paratrooper Diwan Singh displayed heroic bravery completely disregarding his personal safety in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
